How to Choose a Driving Instructor: ADI vs Trainee Explained

The right instructor makes you a good driver for life, not just someone who scrapes through the test. When you’re shopping around, remember that you usually get what you pay for.

Green badge or pink badge?

A fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) displays a green badge in the windscreen. A trainee, or Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), displays a pink one. Trainees are still learning to teach, so they may not have the experience to spot and fix your habits quickly. That often means more lessons in the end.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Are you a fully qualified ADI, and how long have you been teaching?
  • How will you structure my lessons and track my progress?
  • Do you do mock tests on local test routes?
  • How do you decide when I’m ready to book my test?
  • What is your cancellation policy?

Watch out for very cheap offers

Be cautious of rock-bottom prices and instructors who can fit you in at any time. Low-cost lessons are often stretched out over more hours, and too many failed test attempts cost more, knock your confidence and make test waiting lists longer for everyone.
