Passing your test isn’t about memorising a route. It’s about being confident in every situation the examiner might give you. Here is the syllabus Taj works through with every learner. A weak spot in any one area can catch you out on the day, so it’s worth ticking off each one.

Getting started

  • Cockpit drill: doors, seat, steering, seat belt, mirrors
  • Hand and foot controls, parking brake and gears
  • Moving off, changing gear and stopping safely

Core exercises

  • Hill starts and moving off at an angle
  • Mirrors, signals and blind-spot checks before every action
  • Emergency stop
  • Meeting oncoming traffic and passing parked cars safely

Manoeuvres

  • Parallel parking
  • Bay parking: reversing in and driving in
  • Pulling up on the right and reversing two car lengths
  • Turn in the road

Junctions and crossroads

  • Turning left and right into and out of junctions
  • Closed junctions: creeping and peeping safely
  • Crossroads, including unmarked crossroads and box junctions
  • Traffic lights and one-way streets

Roundabouts

  • Mini and double-mini roundabouts
  • Left, ahead and right at larger roundabouts, using the clock-face method
  • Multi-lane approaches and exits

Everyday driving

  • Pedestrian and level crossings
  • Following distances in dry and wet weather
  • Dual carriageways, slip roads and overtaking
  • Road signs, markings and following a sat nav

Good skills are only half of it. Learning to drive is also about attitude: taking responsibility, anticipating what others might do and making calm decisions. That is what Taj’s lessons build alongside the technical skills. Book your first lesson and he’ll show you where you are on this list.
